After spending a year at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Sculpture, and Fiber and Material Studies, Nancy VanDevender completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2007. Her work has been exhibited at the Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, both in Michigan, Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, and at Daimler Chrysler Financial Headquarters in Berlin. In 2008 she installed Picking Cotton, Mississippi to Detroit as a solo exhibition at Emory University’s Visual Arts Gallery, and recently was included in MOCA GA’s Rising Movers and Shakers, ARThouse09, Paper Runway at Atlanta International Airport, and Catherine Fox’s proposal for One Museum Place featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Art at Work: Art and Architecture.
Installed as staged interiors, print and projection are used in VanDevender’s work as backdrops, evaluating how image is transferred culturally through both literal political platform and constructed non-linear narrative.
