2012 Fall Programming
Screening: Jack Smith
Fri, Nov 30, 8–9:30pm
Andy Ditzler’s Film Love series is a regular program at ACAC. Moving image enthusiasts are treated to films that are nearly impossible to access, plus Andy’s thoughtful commentary.
Film Love continues with a screening of a restored version of Jack Smith’s Normal Love (1963-1965, 120 mins). Smith was an artist who excelled in photography, filmmaking, performance art (long before that term was in use), and general theatrical experiences. He was known for mixing the high camp exotica of such 1940s Hollywood films as Arabian Nights and Cobra Woman with 1960s pop art and polymorphous gender play.
Normal Love was never completed by Smith – he continually re-edited it, sometimes during the course of a single screening – and this restored version allows us to see the sometimes astonishing material with which Smith created his theatricalized film projections. Challenging and beautiful, uncompromising and unclassifiable, Normal Love is an act of queer cinematography, and an essential part of the story of underground film.
