Atlanta Contemporary Art Center
Position Title: Director of Development
The position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive fundraising and membership program.
The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center
The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center is celebrating 35 years of continuous operations. Throughout its history, the Contemporary has focused on the exhibition of contemporary art. The Contemporary’s programs have received national attention from peer organizations, private and public foundations, and government agencies.
Programs
The Gallery Program has featured hundreds of exhibitions of work by leading local, regional, national, and international visual artists, working in the widest range of media and materials. The Gallery organizes solo and group exhibitions, as well as major installations and performance pieces, and works collaboratively on a regular basis with guest curators and other institutions to develop and produce exhibitions.
The Studio Artist Program provides working space for 14 Atlanta artists at rates that are significantly below market value for the surrounding neighborhood.
The Education and Outreach Program provides multi-level programming ranging from lectures and panel discussions to hands-on workshops and professional development seminars.
These programs reflect the Contemporary’s commitment to diversity in all its forms, by integrating artists of diverse backgrounds into all programming areas.
The Contemporary’s annual operating budget is approximately $500,000, 70% of which is raised through various fundraising efforts.
Director of Development
Position Summary: Cultivate, motivate and recognize giving, including the annual campaign activities, sponsorships, grants, membership, and special events. Manage direct mail, phone and personal contacts, and event attendance while remaining an ambassador of giving locally, regionally, and nationally.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Annual Giving
- Raise operating and designated money through Annual Fund gifts. Achieved through personal contacts, telephone calls, special event attendance, and direct mail solicitation.
- Prepare and execute solicitation vehicles for various constituencies.
- Prepare Annual Fund plan, strategies and timetable of gift solicitation. Manage the Annual Fund in regard to foundation, corporate, board, and friends giving.
- Report on progress of campaigns on a weekly/monthly basis.
- Represent priorities, mission and goals of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center to the public.
- Build education and understanding of annual giving to the Atlanta Contemporary Art center through Internet Website, written materials, and other outreach strategies.
- Identify and strategize major and planned gifts with the Executive Director and Development Committee of the Board.
- Lead efforts for donor recognition and gift acknowledgement.
- Analyze in written report form in-depth results of each solicitation, including response rate, average gift size, & cost per solicit.
- Support the Executive Director on all aspects of prospect management through, cultivation, the “ask” process, and stewardship.
- Other duties as assigned.
Sponsorships/Special Events
- Identify corporate and individual sponsor candidates for exhibitions and special events fundraising projects, in conjunction with the Executive Director and Gallery Director.
- Develop in-kind contribution opportunities.
- Oversee the organization, planning and execution of all fundraising special events, cultivation and special events.
Grants
- Research and write grant proposals; coordinate essential components of proposals, meeting with Executive Director, as needed. Maintain and update basic organization descriptions to incorporate into grant applications.
- Maintain listing of previously submitted proposals and timelines for subsequent proposal submissions.
- Maintain a calendar of deadlines for grants and grant reports. Coordinate the timely submission of reports with appropriate staff.
- Identify new foundations and corporations, as well as federal and state grant programs that could benefit the Art center.
- Utilize the Internet and other computer-based search tools to research current and potential donors.
- Create and update prospect profiles to aid the Executive Director identifying potential giving ability.
- Review hard-copy journals and periodicals, as well as online sources, for new grant prospects as well as information pertinent to current prospects, donors, trends, philanthropy, and education.
Requirements
Demonstrate support for the mission of the Contemporary
B.A. for an accredited college or university
Minimum five years of development experience in a non-profit organization
Demonstrated experience in a broad range of fundraising techniques and approaches
Ability to connect to potential donors
Ability to work effectively with a small team
Proficiency with one or more multi-purpose donor database programs
Professional affiliation with AFP preferred
Good knowledge of contemporary art a bonus
